18 Dec 2007: New Leicester boss Ian Holloway attacks reports that he's using the press to unsettle Plymouth striker Barry Hayles. 'I don't like it: it's very damaging. I was proud of what I did at Plymouth, and very proud of the Plymouth fans, so I'm not going to raid their team. I'm looking at other targets.'

1 Jan 2008: Signs Barry Hayles for £150k. 'I'm absolutely delighted!'

There is a view in football that you have to deny everything until it has obviously happened, and then pretend that history didn't actually happen.

At least that is the only explanation we can find for Ian Holloway's statement on 20 November 2007 which ran roughly like this:

I am not going to Leicester.  It's total poppycock, if I am allowed to use that worked.  It's absolutely pathetic.  The media is a very powerful thing and, unfortunately, they can make a rumour into a bigger rumour.  But ask anybody who knows me how I feel about Plymouth and they will tell you the truth.  And if you need me to say it again I will: I'm in love with the place.  It's absolutely magnificent.

22 November 2007.  Ian Holloway (obviously not the one noted above) leaves Plymouth and joins Leicester City.
