The BBC Sky dub Arsenal Guardian Sunday Times Sky/Sultana Sultana The Sun

Home Up

Sky and Sultana acknowledge that they got it very wrong in 2007.

Believing the Sky pundit predictions that Arsenal were about to sink into mediocrity and that the wonderful Tottenham were about to surge (yes surge) into the top 4, as Arsenal disappear without trace.

So what did these two intellectual giants of the satellite broadcast do?  They decided that there was no point in putting Arsenal on TV.   Hardly a game scheduled up to the end of November.

By mid-October however there was total panic because there was something rather odd about Arsenal's record by that time.  Here's a few of the stats that somehow managed to sink into the brains of the highly paid executives of the stations...

  • 15 match unbeaten run since April 9 2007
  • 10 consecutive wins in all competitions
  • 7 wins and 1 draw so far in the 2007/8 season
  • Top of the league, top scorers, and considered by most to be the most exciting team in the league
  • A new reserve team that stuffed the Newcastle first team in the league cup in front of a full house - while most other games are played in front of half-empty stadia.

So what did they do?  In a move of total panic every single Arsenal match in December 2007 was moved and put on television.

So they got the message in the end - but the obvious conclusion must be: who ever you trust, don't trust those Sky pundits.
